2020 EG Global Hackathon

This past July Expedia Group held our annual Global Hackathon. For 48 hours we welcomed 1,081 individual hackers in 228 teams across all our Expedia regions. Over 2,300 colleagues voted in our final People’s Choice award. This year’s theme was The Future of Travel and teams came together to work on projects that will ensure Expedia can emerge from the impact of COVID-19 stronger than ever.

CEO Peter Kern was one of the judges for this year’s Global Hackathon.

Organising a global Hackathon in normal circumstances takes a lot of effort and this year the event was completely virtual. Maciej Matyas led a combined volunteer effort of 196 people to ensure everyone could participate remotely and still deliver innovative and creative solutions that will enable us to move forward.

The winning project, Dataloopers was created by Anne MorvanDaniele DonghiFrançois KawalaLingwei MengWei Lee Woon. The Hackathon Judges – CEO Peter Kern, CTO Karen Bolda and President John Kim recognised in this project the potential for greatest broad reach to improve Expedia Group’s customer experience and to retain customers in our environment.

The winning Hackathon team from Geneva proposed leveraging social media data to help Expedia Group customers.

It was amazing to participate with teams across boundaries and time-zones with so much creativity, innovation and passion ?. As Peter Kern said on the night, our colleagues are “the future of travel.”
